Description
In Vietnam, English education has long operated within the English as a Foreign Language paradigm, where learners have limited opportunities to engage in authentic communication. Consequently, many students demonstrate strong knowledge of linguistic forms but lack confidence and fluency in real-world interaction. This paper examines how artificial intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to address this gap by creating classroom conditions that approximate English as a Second Language environments.
The study introduces the concept of an “artificial ESL environment,” in which AI is used not merely as a support tool but as a means to redesign the learning experience. Drawing on developments in Natural Language Processing and Speech Recognition, a practical model is proposed that integrates three elements: AI-enhanced input, interactive communication through conversational agents such as Google Script Gen, Gemini, ChatGPT, and real-time, individualized feedback loops.
The paper presents classroom-based applications in Vietnamese language centers, demonstrating how low-cost, widely accessible technologies can increase learner interaction, autonomy, and speaking competence. It also addresses key challenges, including teacher readiness and responsible AI use.
It is argued that, although Vietnam remains geographically an EFL context, AI integration enables a pedagogical shift toward more immersive, ESL-like learning environments.
Biography
I am an English teacher currently working at Loc Ninh High School in Loc Ninh commune, Dong Nai province, a rural and border-area context where access to educational technology remains limited. I graduated from Hue University of Education in 2006 and began my teaching career at Loc Ninh High School shortly thereafter.
In pursuit of professional development, I completed a Master’s degree in English Linguistics at the University of Foreign Languages, University of Danang, from 2009 to 2011. Since returning to my school, I have continued teaching while actively engaging in subject-based professional activities. Since 2012, I have also served as Deputy Head of the English Subject Committee at the provincial level (formerly Binh Phuoc, now Dong Nai), supporting teacher collaboration and curriculum development.
Working in a disadvantaged educational setting has shaped my strong interest in practical and accessible teaching innovations. I am particularly passionate about integrating technology into English language teaching to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. Despite limited resources, I continuously explore and apply digital tools, including artificial intelligence, to create more interactive and meaningful learning experiences, with the aim of contributing to educational improvement in my local context.
