Description

Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Curriculum emphasizes communicative competence and authentic language use in English education. However, students in many rural and mountainous contexts still have limited opportunities to use English meaningfully beyond formal classrooms.
This presentation introduces a school-wide initiative at Nguyen Hue High School, Lao Cai, aimed at building an English learning ecosystem as a foundation for promoting English as a second language within the school environment. The initiative expands English use beyond classrooms through experiential, interdisciplinary, and technology-enhanced learning activities that promote authentic communication across school and community contexts.
Rather than treating English solely as an academic subject, the model encourages students to use English for communication, collaboration, creativity, and authentic learning tasks. Initial observations suggest positive impacts on learner motivation, confidence, communicative competence, and digital literacy. The initiative also highlights the potential of sustainable school-wide English-speaking environments in supporting authentic language use and learner autonomy in similar educational settings.
