Description
The research surveys the processing factors, including level of confidence and familiarity, as well as learner strategies in biblical idiom comprehension on adult EFL learners in Vietnam. The data is collected from 253 participants, divided into three groups: non-Christian, Christian, and members of Christian religious orders, via an online survey consisting of 20 biblical and non-biblical idioms, and a Likert scale (1-5) to measure the level of confidence and another 14-item Likert scale (1-5) to explore the learner strategies. The expected analysis includes descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation between confidence/familiarity and idiom comprehension, cluster analysis to identify learner strategic groups, and comparison of effectiveness between strategic groups. Based on the results from what have been done so far (ρ = 0.40, p < 0.001), the study expects to find a positive correlation between confidence and accuracy, while detecting overconfidence in the non-Christian group. In terms of strategies, it is expected that three to four strategic clusters will be identified, and the group using strategies based on biblical knowledge would score the highest in idiom comprehension. These findings are expected to contribute to the pedagogical intervention design, aiming to improve idiom learning strategies for EFL learners in Vietnam.
