Description

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines capable of performing tasks such as reasoning, learning, decision-making, and problem-solving (Russell & Norvig, 2021). This study investigates the application of AI in designing advanced English listening activities to support the preparation of high-achieving high school students for provincial-level English competitions. It specifically examines the effectiveness of AI-assisted tools in generating listening materials, increasing task complexity, and fostering higher-order listening skills among gifted learners. In this context, AI-assisted listening task design denotes the pedagogical integration of technologies to create and refine listening materials. These technologies enable teachers to generate authentic-like audio input and diversify task formats to meet the cognitive and linguistic demands of advanced learners. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study collects data through surveys, questionnaires, classroom observations, and analyses of learners’ performance. The participants include Grade 10 English-major students from Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted in Gia Lai Province, who are preparing for provincial-level English competitions. These students represent high-achieving learners with advanced language proficiency and strong academic motivation. Additionally, experienced English teachers and trainers evaluate authenticity, difficulty, and pedagogical suitability of AI-generated materials. The findings indicate that AI-assisted tools not only enrich task authenticity and variety but also enhance learner engagement, strengthens critical listening skills, and improves students’ readiness for competitive examinations. Overall, the study underscores the pedagogical potential of AI in advanced listening instruction and technology-enhanced language learning.
