Vietnam’s recent policy to promote English as a second language in school settings (MOET, 2025) has created an urgent need for teacher-education programmes that align with national curriculum reform and emphasise communicative, content-integrated pedagogy. Yet few studies have systematically examined teachers’ actual needs regarding TESOL curriculum design within this reform context. Existing short-term programmes remain largely theory-oriented and insufficiently contextualised. Drawing on a nationwide needs analysis of 207 current and prospective English teachers across public, private, and international schools, this study identified key needs in curriculum design, classroom management, and assessment literacy. Participants valued practical, mentoring-based training that embeds TESOL principles and integrates CLIL approaches relevant to Vietnam’s educational realities. The findings inform the development of a 120-hour TESOL program responsive to local contexts and policy priorities. This equips teachers to implement communicative and content-based instruction effectively in Vietnam’s language education reform.
Biography
Dr. Diep Tran is a language educator and researcher dedicated to making language learning engaging and meaningful. She earned her PhD in Applied Linguistics from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, in 2021. With over 20 years of teaching experience in both Vietnam and New Zealand, she brings a rich cross-cultural perspective to language education.
Her current research focuses on language testing and assessment with a focus on validating standardized language tests. She has extensive experience in teaching English to young learners, and teaching English phonetics. Dr. Diep Tran is also the founder of TESOL in FOCUS, where she contributes to professional dialogue and development within the TESOL community.
