Description

This study investigates translating metaphors of drinking in the famous novel “The Great Gatsby”' by F. Scott Fitzgerald ïn the view of Conceptual Metaphor Theory developed by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson (1980/2003). The research explores how expressions of drinking in the novel by using a qualitative approach to identify drinking-related metaphorical expressions. The data of the research were collected from this novel and its Vietnamese version “Đại gia Gatsby” by Trinh Lu. The analysis focuses on setting conceptual mappings from 100 expressions of drinking from the novel and finding their equipvalents in Vietnamese version, including DESIRE IS THIRST, SOCIAL LIFE IS DRINKING, LIFE IS A DRINKING EXPERIENCE, PERCEPTION IS DRINKING, and EMOTION IS DRIKING. The findings attempts to find out that some metaphors are preserved due to shared cognitive patterns, many undergo transformation to achieve cultural and linguistic naturalness during the process of translating English into Vietnamese. These shifts often result in partial loss or modification of metaphorical meaning. The study highlights the challenges of translating culturally embedded metaphors in literary texts and emphasizes the importance of balancing semantic accuracy with stylistic and cultural appropriateness. The results accordingly have suggested the implications for the teaching and learning of English, and especially for the lessons of translation for major English students.
