Description

While mastering collocations is vital for natural and fluent expression, vocabulary instruction in many high schools remains heavily dependent on memorizing stagnant, isolated wordlists. This rigid word-to-word translation often acts as a major barrier, causing EFL learners to produce awkward, unnatural phrases. To tackle this persistent issue, this 60-minute interactive workshop offers language teachers a suite of dynamic, low-resource classroom games using America250 historical and cultural narratives to make collocation instruction deeply memorable. The session opens with a practical look at the lexical approach, illustrating how teachers can shift their focus from single vocabulary items to meaningful linguistic chunks. Participants will experience three versatile classroom activities firsthand using America250 content, including "Collocation Speed Dating" for kinaesthetic matching, "The Domino Effect" for structural reinforcement, and "AI-Generated Collocation Stories" to demonstrate how digital tools can spark creative language output. Drawing on real-world experience from large high school classrooms, the presenters will share insights on how these activities can seamlessly bridge the gap between heavy syllabus requirements and active communication. The workshop concludes with a hands-on collaborative segment where attendees will work in small groups to adapt these games to specific textbook units. Participants will take away concrete pedagogical tools and downloadable templates ready for immediate classroom application.
