Description

As Việt Nam continues to press toward foreign language integration, especially English as a second language, content teachers have the dual burden of learning English and teaching in it across the curriculum. The path to empowering students through content and language integration is eased with the help of English teachers’ language support courses for teachers in content areas using English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI). EMI teachers are also tasked with moving beyond traditional methods (teacher-centered lectures) to methodology that engages students and enlivens language. By weaving in the 4Cs (Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity), teachers using EMI can begin to point their students toward global citizenship with 21st-century practices that are student-centered. In this workshop, we will acknowledge the challenges EMI teachers face. With the time we have, we will examine two Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) EMI lesson plans, identifying the features that make just one of them a 21st-century plan with integrated 4Cs. Participants will then use that model to recreate one lesson plan they teach that needs a 4Cs “makeover.” Participants will leave the workshop with the full presentation to review, the model lesson plans for comparison, and new professional insight into why and how to begin making learning both practical and engaging.
