Description
The study investigated EFL teachers’ experiences and perceptions regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in conducting Master’s-level research in the Vietnamese context. A mixed-methods design was employed, utilizing a questionaire with 99 EFL teachers and semi-structured interviews with 10 teachers. The findings revealed that the teachers had positive and open attitudes toward using AI to support their research; however, they expressed several doubts and concerns. The EFL teachers reported using various AI-supported tools for multiple purposes, with a focus on searching for sources and synthesizing the literature; supporting academic writing, and outlining and developing ideas. They perceived eight benefits of using AI in assisting them to search for and synthesize the literature; enhance academic writing; develop independent research; develop ideas and make outlines; promote critical thinking and creativity; save time and increase writing quality; analyze and interpret data; cite sources and detect plagiarism. However, they also identified seven barriers hindering the effective use of AI, including a lack of data accuracy and reliability; teachers’ insufficient understanding of AI limitations; limited critical thinking ability; risks of confidentiality and privacy breaches; inappropriate policies and incentives; fake sources; ethical issues and academic integrity concerns; insufficient AI literacy; and Internet disconnection. Accordingly, the teachers highlighted key ethical concerns regarding data accuracy; research ethics; critical thinking, understanding of AI limitations; acknowledgement of AI use; AI detection, plagiarism, and citations. Finally, several implications are proposed to improve Vietnamese EFL teachers’ experiences and perceptions toward utilizing AI for conducting research in postgraduate education.
