Description

Second language (L2) pragmatics has been identified to be underrepresented in EFL textbooks and generally neglected in English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching curriculums and teacher training programs despite its well-established status in L2 teaching research. Adopting a repeated measures design, this study examines the effectiveness of a training workshop designed to enhance EFL university students’ awareness and knowledge of L2 pragmatics in email communication. Its effect was measured using pre-training and post-training questionnaires completed by participating students, together with their feedback on the workshop. The findings showed that the training workshop exhibited positive effects in raising the students’ knowledge of writing request emails specifically and thereby enhancing their L2 pragmatic awareness in email communication generally. Furthermore, the event proved the effectiveness of short training workshops, which can be a useful and economical in low-resource EFL contexts like Vietnam. The study thereby implies the need for more L2 pragmatics teaching and learning activities at university and school so that L2 pragmatics could be included in EFL contexts in a principled and systematic way.
