Description
This paper reports on a classroom-based research project that investigates the feasibility of integrating English into subject learning in a Vietnamese high school context. Although recent educational policies in Vietnam emphasize the importance of transforming English into a second language, in practice English is still largely taught as an academic subject rather than used as a medium for learning other subjects. The study was conducted with 34 Grade 11 English-major students at Thai Binh High School for the Gifted over a four-week period.
Instead of learning English only as a separate subject, students were required to use English as a learning tool across five core subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Physics, History, and Geography. Working in five groups, making videos learning and sharing knowledge about selected textbook content, developed subject-specific vocabulary lists, designed supplementary exercises, and presented subject knowledge using English as the primary language of communication. Data were collected through entry tests, post-tests, speaking tasks, student reflection journals, and classroom observation notes.
The findings reveal clear improvement in students’ academic vocabulary, knowledge, confidence in using English for learning purposes, and willingness to study subject content through English. The study also demonstrates that short-term classroom projects can serve as an effective starting point for integrating English into subject learning. Overall, the paper proposes a practical pedagogical model that supports the ongoing effort to transform English into a second language in Vietnamese secondary schools.
Biography
With nearly 20 years of experience in English language education, I am currently an English teacher deeply committed to promoting the role of English as a tool for learning rather than merely a school subject. My professional interests focus on integrating English into the teaching and learning of other subjects, particularly in the context of Vietnamese secondary education. I am especially passionate about interdisciplinary learning, the use of English as a medium of instruction, and the integration of technology to create more engaging and meaningful learning experiences for students. Through classroom-based innovation and project-based learning, I aim to help students develop not only language proficiency but also the confidence to use English in authentic academic contexts. My work reflects a strong belief that English can play a transformative role in modern education in Vietnam when combined with creativity, collaboration, and technology.
