Speaker
Description
This study explores the use of AI-mediated monologue speaking activities in promoting learner agency within a university context that is gradually shifting from English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to English as a Second Language (ESL). Although artificial intelligence has recently attracted increasing attention in language education, there remains limited research on how AI tools support speaking development and autonomous learning among non-English major students in Vietnam. The study was conducted with 42 B1-level students at Hanoi University of Finance and Banking over a six-week intervention period. During the project, students completed AI-supported monologue speaking tasks related to workplace communication, such as professional self-introductions and finance-related presentations. ChatGPT was used to support idea development, organization of speaking content, and self-reflection after practice. Data were collected through pre- and post-speaking tests using an analytic rubric, a Likert-scale questionnaire on learner agency, and weekly reflective journals. The findings show noticeable improvement in students’ fluency and coherence, together with positive changes in self-directed learning behaviors, particularly goal-setting, self-monitoring, and independent speaking practice outside the classroom. The study suggests that AI-supported speaking activities can create more flexible learning opportunities and contribute to the repositioning of English as a practical means of communication in Vietnamese higher education contexts.
Biography
My name is Le Thi Yen. I'm a lecturer of English at Hanoi University of Finance and Banking, Vietnam, where I teach English language skills to both English major and non-English major students. My professional interests focus on English speaking development, learner autonomy, AI-assisted language learning, and technology integration in TESOL. I have been involved in teaching courses related to speaking, pronunciation, and communicative English at tertiary level. Recently, my research has explored the use of ChatGPT and other AI tools in enhancing monologue speaking practice and supporting self-directed learning among Vietnamese university students. Through my work, I aim to promote more practical and learner-centered approaches to English education in the context of the transition from EFL to ESL in Vietnamese higher education.
