Description

The research project explored how AI-enhanced tech could help with English speaking assessments for sixth graders in a Google Digital Classroom, using an Action Research methodology at a lower secondary school in Hanoi, Vietnam. Practical problems that led to this study were the inability to individually provide students with written feedback on their speaking skills; low confidence and motivation of many students in speaking English; and challenges in tracking the students' progress over time. To address these challenges, the researcher introduced new technology-combined ways for the students to improve their speaking skills during the 8-week research period, including ELSA Speech Analyzer, SpeakEasy, and Edcafe AI chatbot. The researcher used mixed-methods to collect data about student speaking behaviour, including pre- and post-test assessments of students' speaking abilities, questionnaires, classroom observations, and group interviews. As for quantitative data, it was indicated that students improved their pronunciation, fluency, interaction, and overall speaking ability. Qualitative findings further revealed increased learner confidence, higher participation rates, and more positive attitudes toward speaking English. The study also highlights the potential of AI-supported assessment to foster students’ digital competencies within the framework of DigComp Vietnam and the 2018 General Education Programme. The findings suggest that AI can serve as an effective pedagogical support tool while maintaining the central role of teachers in facilitating learning and assessment.
