Description
In light of the growing use of AI tools, should educators consider returning to traditional examinations? AI technologies have significantly reshaped higher education, particularly in how assessments are designed and evaluated to verify student authorship, maintain originality, and ensure students demonstrate genuine understanding of their submissions. Forming reliable judgments about student learning in the age of AI requires varied and contextualized assessment types to ensure fairness and integrity (Lodge et al., 2023). At the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Languages of the University of Puthisastra, where courses emphasize academic writing, submission-based assessments remain central, placing academic integrity at the forefront of faculty priorities.
To address this challenge, the faculty has piloted 2 major initiatives: submission validation and submission defense. These approaches demonstrate how academic integrity can be strengthened without abandoning authentic assessment practices.
Traditional examinations remain a safeguard for academic integrity, yet the pilots presented in this workshop demonstrate replicable models that can be trialed in specific contexts. These initiatives provide a reliable baseline for ensuring fairness and authorship. This presentation is particularly relevant to educators, teacher trainers, assessment coordinators, and academic leaders seeking strategies to uphold integrity while adapting to AI-driven learning environments. Participants will leave with practical models adaptable to their own academic settings.
