Description
This study addresses the underexplored role of ChatGPT in theme-focused writing, particularly cultural topics, by examining its impact on writing self-efficacy among 160 Vietnamese EFL undergraduates in an English Culture course. A questionnaire adapted from the Second Language Writer Self-Efficacy Scale (Teng et al., 2018) was administered before and after ChatGPT use to measure changes in self-efficacy. In addition, semi-structured interviews with 10 participants provided deeper insights into students’ experiences. Quantitative data were analyzed using normality tests, mixed-design ANOVA, independent samples t-tests, and paired samples t-tests, while qualitative data were examined through content analysis and thematic coding. Findings indicate that ChatGPT use improved students’ writing self-efficacy, though gains varied across different self-efficacy constructs. Overall, the study contributes to existing research by confirming ChatGPT’s positive impact and highlighting its pedagogical potential in supporting themed writing tasks in EFL contexts.
