Description
Cultural barriers have been widely recognized as a major challenge to adult EFL learners’ engagement with extensive viewing of English-language audiovisual materials. Although prior research has examined the impact of cultural distance on comprehension and motivation, there remains limited empirical evidence on how learners strategically respond to these barriers. This study investigates the strategies adult EFL learners employ to overcome cultural barriers in extensive viewing and evaluates their perceived effectiveness. Using a quantitative-dominant design with qualitative triangulation, the study draws on questionnaire data from 120 adult EFL learners and follow-up interviews with 15 participants. The findings identify key patterns of strategy use and demonstrate variation in their perceived effectiveness in mitigating cultural barriers during extensive viewing. Collectively, these results provide empirical insights into how adult EFL learners manage culturally challenging audiovisual input.
