The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education is changing the way teachers plan lessons, design assessments, create learning materials, and engage in professional learning. While AI offers significant opportunities, many educators remain uncertain about how to use these tools responsibly. Questions related to academic integrity, data privacy, transparency, and the appropriate role of AI in teaching are becoming increasingly important, yet practical guidance for teachers is often limited.
This presentation shares the experience of developing an AI guide for academic staff at a Vietnamese university. The project was initiated in response to increasing interest in AI among lecturers and the need for institutionally grounded guidance that goes beyond technical training. Rather than focusing on how to use specific AI tools, the guide aims to support informed and responsible decision-making in teaching, assessment, research, and professional practice.
The paper discusses the rationale behind the project, the key principles that informed the design of the guide, and the process of translating broad ethical concerns into practical recommendations for educators. Particular attention is given to issues such as academic integrity, human oversight, responsible prompting, transparency in AI-assisted work, and the protection of personal data.
By reflecting on the development of this institutional resource, the paper highlights the role of professional learning in fostering ethical AI use and considers how similar initiatives can support teachers as they navigate the opportunities and challenges of AI in education.

Biography

Ms Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong is a lecturer at University of Languages and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. She has 19-year experience in teaching English and methodology, and training pre-service and in-service teachers. She is also an author of English textbooks for pre-school and upper-secondary students. Her interests include Teacher Education, English Language Teaching, ICT in ELT.
