Description

Artificial intelligence-powered language learning applications have become increasingly popular in English language education; however, limited research has examined how self-regulated learning behaviors influence learning outcomes in AI-assisted pronunciation practice. Guided by Zimmerman’s Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) framework, this study investigates the relationship between learner engagement behaviors and English proficiency improvement among users of ELSA Speak, an AI-powered English pronunciation application. Specifically, the study explores how practice duration, engagement frequency, and habit consistency predict improvement in the English Pronunciation Score, ELSA's proprietary proficiency metric, and pronunciation gains. In addition, the study examines whether baseline CEFR level moderates the relationship between self-regulated learning behaviors and proficiency improvement. Behavioral and proficiency data from 1,779 activated learners are analyzed using multiple linear regression and moderation analysis, with the starting CEFR level examined as a potential moderator of the relationship between behavior and improvement. Findings are expected to contribute to understanding how specific SRL behavioral dimensions differentially predict language learning outcomes in AI-assisted environments and to inform how organizations and educators deploy such tools for learners at different proficiency levels.
