Description

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) increasingly influences language education, its practical integration into flipped classroom models in EFL contexts remains limited, particularly in Vietnam. Drawing on flipped learning principles and learner autonomy theory, this study explores how AI can enhance pre-class preparation and support student-centred learning. AI tools were used to generate instructional videos and design interactive pre-class materials to scaffold pre-class learning, enabling more flexible, personalised, and self-paced learning experiences. One hundred and five students participated in the study. Data were collected through a mixed-method questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that students responded positively to the AI-supported flipped classroom model, reporting increased motivation, engagement, classroom participation, and preparedness for in-class activities. Students also valued the flexibility of AI-generated materials, which appeared to strengthen learner autonomy and confidence in classroom interactions. However, several challenges were identified, including difficulties in time management, limited digital competence, inconsistent self-regulation, and occasional over-reliance on AI tools. The study provides practical insights for integrating AI into flipped classrooms, highlighting the importance of clear instructional guidance, engaging digital materials, and institutional support. These findings are particularly relevant for EFL teachers seeking to enhance student engagement in technology-mediated learning environments.
