Description

Previous studies have focused on single speech acts of either apologies or responses to apologies; however, it is the exchanges of the pragmatic acts of apology-response strategies which help maintain social relationships. This research aims to find out the exchanges in English film conversations. Theoretically, the conceptual framework includes the pragmatic acts by Mey (2013), exchanges by Schegloff (1974), speech acts by Searle (1975), direct apology strategies by Trosborg (2011) and apology response strategies by Holmes (1990, 1995). This is a qualitative descriptive study collecting 227 exchanges from socio-psychological films in American English which were categorized into 3 primary patterns. Results showed that the most frequently used pattern was direct apology strategies - direct response strategies with 134 exchanges classified into 27 different sub-types of exchanges. The study is hoped to make a contribution to linguistics since it
extended the response taxonomy by Holmes (1995) with mixed apology response
strategy. The findings also provided practical assistance to learners of English as foreign languages.
