Speaker
Description
Recent studies on AI-assisted language learning have examined various learner responses; however, learners’ trust in and perceived authenticity of AI-generated conversational models in EFL speaking courses remain insufficiently explored in Vietnam. This study investigates these perceptions among 31 first-year English-major undergraduates enrolled in a speaking course at Nong Lam university, where ChatGPT was used to generate model dialogues for speaking practice. Adopting a mixed-methods design, quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from established trust-in-automation measures, complemented by items assessing learners’ perceived authenticity of AI-generated conversations. Qualitative insights were obtained from open-ended survey responses. The findings show that while students reported moderate trust in ChatGPT for speaking practice, their perceptions of authenticity were more reserved, particularly regarding real-life contextual and pragmatic relevance. The study highlights the importance of considering both trust and perceived authenticity when integrating generative AI into EFL speaking instruction, offering timely pedagogical insights for the responsible use of AI-generated materials in university contexts.
