This research focuses on the analysis of lexical cohesive devices in all the reading texts in the Tiếng Anh 12 textbook, which is compiled by Vietnam Education Publishing House according to the “General Education Program: English Subject Program” under Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDĐT dated December 26, 2018, by the Ministry of Education and Training. Qualitative descriptive method was used in investigating lexical cohesive devices, as proposed by Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory. The findings reveal 338 lexical devices in the reading text, consisting of 259 reiterations (mainly repetition) and 79 collocations. In addition, the study of reading texts reveals that the quantity and types of lexical cohesive devices in each text vary greatly according on the topic and length of the text. Hopefully, this study will give the insight of the reading texts by using appropriate lexical cohesive devices in creating coherent reading texts as instruments for teaching and learning.
Biography
Khuat Thi Thuy Chi graduated with highest distinction in English Language Education from Hanoi National University of Education. Her research interests include pragmatics, discourse analysis, and English language teaching. She has conducted research on lexical cohesion in reading texts in Tiếng Anh 12 textbook.
