Description
The proliferation of technology has brought about students’ using AI tools for language learning and academic support. This study aims to investigate the correlation between students’ writing proficiency and their purposes for using AI in writing skills. To collect data, 80 English-major freshmen participated in a 9-item questionnaire designed with 5-scale Likert, accompanied by a CEFR self-assessment grid focusing on writing skills. The collected data was analyzed using Spearman’s rank-order correlation. The finding reflected significant negative correlations found between students’ writing proficiency and different purposes of using AI, indicating those with lower proficiency levels tended to find AI tools for support more frequently in their process of writing. Most obviously, lower writing proficiency students were more likely to use AI to translate sentences and ideas into English, which showed the strongest correlation. Other notable correlations were identified in the use of AI for idea-related purposes, including generating ideas, developing ideas in detail, and organizing them. Overall, the results suggest that lower-proficiency students demonstrated a greater tendency to use AI for various writing-related purposes compared to their higher-proficiency counterparts. Moreover, this study recommended further research corporating real-time essay writing assessments evaluated by instructors in order to reach a more profound understanding of the correlation between students’ writing proficiency and their use of AI.
