Description
This study aims to investigate the challenges and barriers to the effective integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in English language teaching within a Vietnamese higher education context. The research adopted a quantitative design, using a structured questionnaire administered to 50 English teachers at the School of Languages and Tourism, Hanoi University of Industry. The findings reveal that although teachers acknowledge the pedagogical potential of AI to enhance lesson planning, assessment, and instructional effectiveness, their actual use remains limited. Key individual challenges include limited experience, low confidence, concerns regarding the reliability of AI-generated content, difficulties in monitoring students’ use of AI tools, and the risk of students’ excessive dependence on AI. At the institutional level, major barriers involve inadequate training opportunities, limited technical support, budget constraints, heavy administrative workload, a lack of clear guidelines for AI implementation, and limited institutional encouragement for innovation. These constraints significantly reduce teachers’ willingness and frequency of AI use, while negatively affecting lesson planning quality and assessment effectiveness. These findings provide practical implications for improving AI integration in English language teaching, highlighting the need for regular training, accessible technical assistance, affordable tools, clear institutional guidelines, reduced administrative workload, and strong institutional encouragement.
