Description
In recent years, there has been increasing interest in using English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), particularly in higher education. As a result, a growing number of studies have examined the use of EMI in classrooms by both teachers and students. However, in countries where EMI is still at an early stage, such as Vietnam, empirical research on the various aspects of preparedness for EMI implementation in higher education remains limited. This study investigates the pre-implementation voices and preparedness of content teachers at a private university in the Mekong Delta as they navigate the transition toward an EMI framework. Utilizing a descriptive quantitative research design, data are gathered via a structured questionnaire to address two core dimensions: (1) Content teachers’ underlying perceptions and pedagogical beliefs regarding the value of EMI in their respective disciplines; and (2) Their awareness and evaluation of current institutional management decisions and the adequacy of classroom language resources. By capturing teacher voices before the policy is formally enforced, the findings reveal diverse perceptions and attitudes toward EMI among lecturers, with variations observed across demographic and teaching experience. Additionally, lecturers are aware of the value of EMI-related professional development in boosting their efficacy and self-assurance in EMI instruction. The insights generated from this study offer valuable, context-specific implications for university policymakers and curriculum designers to build effective, localized professional development and resource support systems prior to the official EMI rollout.
