Description
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into English language teaching has increasingly transformed EFL writing instruction, particularly through AI writing assistants such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and QuillBot. This study examines the influence of AI writing assistants on academic writing improvement through the mediating role of AI-enhanced learner autonomy among high school EFL learners at Tran Hung Dao High School, Cam Ranh, Khanh Hoa. A quantitative research approach using a cross-sectional survey design was employed, and data were collected from 305 high school EFL learners through structured questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0. The findings revealed that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, AI feedback quality, and writing self-efficacy significantly influenced AI-enhanced learner autonomy, which subsequently had a positive effect on academic writing improvement. The study highlights the important role of AI-supported technologies in promoting autonomous learning and enhancing EFL writing performance. The findings also provide important pedagogical implications for AI integration, learner-centered instruction, and digital transformation in secondary EFL education.
