Description

As Vietnam deepens its international integration, the Government has issued Decision 2371/QĐ-TTg, titled “Making English a Second Language in Schools for the period 2025-2035, with a vision to 2045.” Nevertheless, limited research has addressed the role of pre-service teachers - a pivotal workforce in the policy’s implementation. This study seeks to examine their perspectives on the initiative, the hurdles in attaining the linguistic readiness for teaching English as a second language in the future, and their expectations to overcome these challenges. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The findings of this investigation are expected to shed light on how the key future workforce perceive and prepare for the government’s new policy implementation, particularly in terms of their awareness, linguistic readiness, and professional intentions regarding English as a second language. Based on these insights, it is recommended that teacher education institutions and policy-makers design targeted language enhancement programs, pedagogical training, and support mechanisms to better equip pre-service teachers for effective policy implementation.

Biography

I am a first-year student majoring in English Language Teacher Education at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. I am a highly motivated and growth-oriented learner who is always eager to broaden my knowledge and gain practical insights. Therefore, I hope to participate in this conference to learn from experienced lecturers, researchers, and senior students, as well as to expand my professional network within the field of English language teaching. As someone who is deeply interested in the implementation of Decision 2371/QĐ-TTg, I explored how other pre-service teachers perceive this policy. In this conference, I am sharing my investigation into their perspectives, difficulties, future orientations, and suggestions regarding the implementation of English as a second language in Vietnam’s educational context. Through this conference, I also hope to enhance my research skills, gain academic experience, and contribute to discussions on English language education in Vietnam.
