Description
This case study investigates the potential of a home-based language immersion approach to assist Vietnamese young learners in transitioning from the acquisition of English as a foreign language to the preparation for English-medium education. The teacher developed a year-long home practice scheme for learners aged 5–10 in an online supplemental English class. This scheme combines extensive listening through English audio played daily and leveled extensive reading using a digital platform. Drawing on Krashen’s comprehensible input and extensive listening/reading principles, the study follows a cohort of 15 learners who consistently maintained daily listening and reading routines for at least one year. Data sources include classroom observations, learning logs, and parent questionnaires. Teacher observations and parent reports show that learners who gained a great exposure to home-based extensive were able to follow age-appropriate English-medium primary curriculum with relatively minimal additional language support. Furthermore, they also develop stronger listening comprehension and reading literacy, and enhance greater confidence in academic English. This is proven by their consistent, self-directed engagement with a US-based primary program at home. The research emphasizes the value of meticulously scaffolded home practice in transforming English from a foreign subject to a functional medium of learning for young learners in Vietnam. It provides micro-level evidence for Vietnam's broader ESL-oriented educational roadmap.

Biography
I am a university lecturer and English language educator with more than twelve years of experience teaching English at the tertiary level in Vietnam. I possess an M.TESOL degree from Victoria University in collaboration with Hanoi University, where I cultivated a profound interest in pedagogy for young learners and second language acquisition. In the last three years, I have concentrated on applying ESL-oriented methodologies for Vietnamese children in online classes, particularly through home-based "language immersion" that incorporates extensive listening, extensive reading, and CLIL-inspired topic work. My current research examines how digital platforms and structured input can assist young EFL learners in progressing towards ESL preparedness and engaging more comfortably with English-medium curriculum. In 2025, I delivered my research titled “Feasibility and Preliminary Outcomes of an Integrated Model (CLIL, Extensive Listening, Extensive Reading) for Young (5–8) Vietnamese Online English Learners” at the VIETESL 2025 Conference Proceedings held at Hanoi Pedagogical University 2. I persist in designing and researching technology-mediated programs that facilitate sustainable and pleasurable English learning for young learners, focusing on home-based practice, family engagement, and the larger transition from EFL to ESL within the Vietnamese setting.
