Abstract
In response to Decision No. 2371/QĐ-TTg on promoting English as a second language in schools, establishing a strong phonics foundation for primary students is essential. This study reports an innovative practice at Phuoc An No. 1 Primary School, where the teaching of 44 English sounds and 212 rhymes is systematically integrated into every lesson through the Cardlish flashcard system in Grade 4A and Grade 5 classes. Within the limited time of the official curriculum, only selected textbook vocabulary is analyzed to guide students in identifying and dividing syllables, thereby activating their phonological awareness. The approach is grounded in phonics-based theory and learner-centered practice, shifting the focus from rote memorization to decoding skills. To extend learning beyond the classroom, a YouTube channel, “Supporting English as Second Language,” with 33 instructional videos has been developed to support structured self-learning. As a result, students demonstrate noticeable improvements in reading fluency, pronunciation accuracy, confidence, and engagement. The combination of in-class integration and digital learning resources provides practical evidence for enhancing early English literacy. This approach proves feasible and effective, contributing to the development of foundational English competence and supporting the national goal of establishing English as a second language in schools.
