Description

Recent years have seen the rapid emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), including tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and QuillBot, which have noticeably transformed English language education. Besides helping teachers prepare lessons, design materials, and provide feedback, this emergence also raises important questions about how university EFL lecturers perceive their professional roles in AI-enhanced teaching contexts. However, limited research has explored the relationship between generative AI and lecturers’ professional identity. Therefore, this qualitative study, grounded in Yazan’s (2023) Language Teacher Identity framework, aims to explore Vietnamese university EFL lecturers’ professional identity in the era of generative AI. Data have been gathered through semi-structured interviews with seven Vietnamese university EFL lecturers and will be analyzed thematically into four themes: (1) professional role transformation in the AI era, (2) AI as a pedagogical assistant, (3) professional tensions and ethical concerns, and (4) personal and institutional support for AI integration. The findings are expected to offer practical implications for AI-related teacher professional development and responsible AI integration in Vietnamese EFL higher education.
