Description

The emergence of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools is rapidly redefining the boundaries and practices of English language classrooms around the world. There have been many studies focusing on teachers’ perceptions of AI-supported learning and their readiness to integrate AI and digital technologies into their classroom practices. However, there remains a gap in understanding EFL teachers’ digital competence as well as their professional needs, especially in the Vietnamese context. This study addresses this gap by exploring pre-service English language teachers’ competence and confidence in using AI, and their perceived needs for training and support. Conducted at a local university in Vietnam, the study involved 200 students who participated in a survey questionnaire, followed by in-depth interviews with a group of 10 students. Results revealed that pre-service English language teachers have good competence in AI tools and digital technologies but need additional training and support to implement these tools effectively in their classrooms. Recommendations for policymaking and curriculum development are provided.
