ABSTRACT
This study investigates the AIM Model, which integrates artificial intelligence (AI), mind mapping, and explicit instruction in teaching English vocabulary to Grade 12 students at Tuy Phuoc No. 3 High School. The study arose from a context in which vocabulary learning remained considerably limited: 74.9% of students relied mainly on rote memorisation, and 100% of the teachers interviewed reported that many students still had serious gaps in their basic English knowledge. Against this background, the study sought to identify a more suitable way of organising vocabulary instruction within the wider context of educational reform and digital transformation. The research was carried out over eight months with 159 out of 327 Grade 12 students, accounting for 48.6% of the whole cohort. Pre- and post-intervention results showed improvement in vocabulary breadth, vocabulary depth, contextual vocabulary use, and overall performance. In particular, the overall mean score increased from 4.36 to 6.45, with a very high level of statistical significance (p < 0.05). In addition, student survey data and teacher observations collected towards the end of the 2025 - 2026 academic year indicated positive changes in students’ learning interest, level of participation, and sense of initiative. These initial findings suggest that the AIM Model is a promising approach worth considering for the development of English vocabulary at upper secondary level.

Biography

My full name is Tran Thi Diem Hung. I was born in 1985 and currently work as an English teacher at Tuy Phuoc No. 3 High School. I graduated from Quy Nhon University in 2008 and completed my Master’s degree in Theory and Methodology of English Language Teaching in 2024.
With a strong passion for teaching and developing students’ English proficiency, I have five years of experience teaching English at the high school level. Throughout my teaching career, I have continuously made efforts to innovate teaching methods and apply technology as well as modern teaching approaches to improve students’ learning outcomes.
I am particularly interested in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), mind mapping, and explicit instruction in English vocabulary teaching in order to enhance students’ practical language use and learning motivation.
