Description

Gamification has recently gained increasing attention in English language teaching due to its potential to enhance learner motivation and classroom engagement. In Vietnamese secondary EFL classrooms, however, vocabulary lessons are often taught through repetition and translation-based activities, which may limit students’ participation and communicative use of language. Hadfield (1999) emphasized that games function as structured yet enjoyable activities that combine practice with motivation. Similarly, Uberman (1998) highlighted that games help learners consolidate vocabulary and improve fluency while maintaining learner interest. This interactive presentation demonstrates how game-based learning activities can be integrated into Unit 12 Robots from the Grade 6 Global Success textbook to create a more engaging and learner-centered classroom environment. Through a series of hands-on activities such as Robot Mission Race, Boss Robot Battle, and Design Your Dream Robot, participants will experience how vocabulary related to teacher robots, doctor robots, factory robots, home robots, and space robots can be transformed into meaningful speaking and collaborative tasks. The presentation also highlights practical strategies for managing large classes, encouraging participation among mixed-level learners, and adapting low-tech activities to Vietnamese teaching contexts. By the end of the session, participants will gain practical ideas and ready-to-use techniques for applying gamified pedagogy to vocabulary instruction while promoting communicative language use and student engagement in secondary EFL classrooms.
