Description

Bilingual education has emerged as a prevalent educational framework in numerous countries, including several Asian nations like Vietnam. Institutions implementing bilingual programs are predominantly required to enforce an English-only policy in EFL classrooms, which may pose challenges for students in comprehending English instruction. This issue may pose a challenge for students with lower proficiency levels, such as those in primary school. It is recommended that teachers have to contemplate their selection of languages in the classroom. This research seeks to investigate educators' viewpoints on the utilisation of both native and target languages in instruction, referred to as "translanguaging", as well as translanguaging strategies in young bilingual classrooms. The research instruments comprised five semi-structured interviews, seven classroom observations, and seven evaluations of lesson plans. The results from the transcription of research instruments indicated that teachers expressed their opinions in diverse manners, ranging from positive to negative. The predominant strategies employed were lesson elucidation, participatory and affective translanguaging. The research aims to enhance the field of bilingual education, particularly in translanguaging, by equipping educators with insights and targeted strategies for future implementation.
