Description

Amid accelerating globalization, English is increasingly repositioned from a foreign language to a functional second language, yet the effectiveness of teacher professional development in enabling this shift remains uneven. This study investigates how professional development influences EFL-to-ESL repositioning and its alignment with internationalized education and workplace demands across four high schools in Vietnam and the Philippines. Adopting a mixed-methods, multi-site case study design, the research integrates survey data, interviews, and classroom observations. Findings reveal that sustained, context-sensitive professional development significantly enhances communicative pedagogy, fostering stronger alignment with real-world language use. Institutional disparities highlight the role of resources and professional learning cultures in shaping outcomes. The study contributes empirically grounded insights into scalable teacher development models, informing policy and practice in internationalizing education systems.
