Description

This study examines how Task-Based Learning (TBL) improves speaking fluency and accuracy for EFL students. The research is based on the idea that students learn language better through meaningful tasks rather than studying grammar rules alone. Many teachers struggle to develop both fluency and accuracy, so this study addresses that issue. Sixty second-year English majors at a Vietnamese university participated. One group learned speaking with TBL for eight weeks; the other followed traditional teaching. Data came from pre-tests and post-tests where student speech was recorded. Fluency was measured by words per minute and hesitations. Accuracy was measured by error-free clauses. Interviews were also conducted. Results showed the TBL group improved significantly more in both areas. Students were more confident, spoke naturally, and used grammar better. Interview data revealed learners enjoyed real-life tasks and felt more motivated. The study concludes that TBL effectively develops both fluency and accuracy. For classroom practice, teachers should design relevant tasks and include post-task feedback to reinforce accuracy. These findings offer useful insights for university teachers in Vietnam seeking to enhance student speaking skills.
