Description

This study investigates the perceived effectiveness of online resources in improving English listening skills among English-major students at the Academy of Policy and Development (APD), Vietnam. The research aims to identify the types of online resources commonly used by students, evaluate their perceived effectiveness in listening development, and explore the main difficulties learners encounter when practicing listening through digital platforms. A quantitative descriptive research design was adopted, and data were collected from 50 English-major students through an online questionnaire administered via Google Forms. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods, including frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The findings indicate that podcasts, language learning applications, YouTube videos, and movies were the most frequently used online resources for listening practice. Students generally perceived online resources positively, particularly in helping them become familiar with different English accents and increasing motivation for listening practice. However, several challenges were also identified, including limited vocabulary, lack of concentration, unfamiliar accents, and fast speech. The study further reveals that the effectiveness of online resources depends not only on the availability of digital materials but also on learners’ strategy use, vocabulary knowledge, and self-regulation. The findings provide pedagogical implications for both students and teachers regarding the more effective integration of online resources into English listening practice.
