ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effectiveness of Gizmo, an AI-integrated application, in fostering students’ English reading comprehension skills at a high school in Thai Nguyen, Vietnam. The study aimed to examine students’ current reading difficulties, evaluate the impact of Gizmo on students’ reading performance, and explore students’ attitudes toward AI-assisted learning tools. The study follows a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The participants included 25 eleventh-grade students who participated in an eight-week Gizmo-based reading intervention. Data were collected through pre-questionnaires, post-questionnaires, practice test results, and pre-test and post-test scores. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired samples t-tests. The findings revealed that students initially faced several difficulties in English reading comprehension, particularly in vocabulary, identifying main ideas, making inferences, and understanding complex texts. After the intervention, students’ reading performance improved considerably, with the mean score increasing from 1.98 in the pre-test to 2.64 in the post-test. The paired samples t-test also indicated a statistically significant difference between the two test results. In addition, students expressed positive attitudes toward the Gizmo application, especially regarding vocabulary improvement, reading confidence, and engagement in reading activities. The study suggests that AI-integrated applications such as Gizmo can serve as effective supplementary tools for improving English reading comprehension in EFL high school contexts.
