Description

This study investigates the implementation of an enhanced Think – Pair – Share framework (e-TPS) to improve primary students’ vocabulary retention and communicative competence in alignment with the ongoing digital transformation in education. As English is increasingly repositioned as a second language in Vietnam, there is a growing need for innovative, technology-integrated pedagogical approaches. The study proposes an adaptation of the traditional TPS model into a four-stage instructional process supported by digital tools. In the “Think” phase, students actively engage in knowledge exploration using AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT and Google Voice Search. The “Pair” and “Share” phases are facilitated through digital platforms that promote collaboration and encourage active language use. The final phase, “Connect & Extend,” enables students to consolidate and expand their learning by creating and sharing learning products on platforms such as Zalo and YouTube. The study was conducted with primary students at Thu Khoa Huan Primary School. The findings indicate significant improvements in students’ language skills, particularly in speaking (increasing from 55% to 88%) and listening (from 60% to 85%). In addition to enhancing linguistic competence, the e-TPS model also fosters digital literacy and learner autonomy. The results suggest that the e-TPS approach is practical, scalable, and adaptable to similar educational contexts. It offers a viable solution for improving the quality of English language teaching and contributes meaningfully to the implementation of the 2018 General Education Curriculum in Vietnam.
