The increasing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools is transforming how students approach writing tasks in both IELTS and academic writing classrooms. Many teachers have observed that students rely on AI-generated content to complete assignments, often resulting in linguistically accurate but cognitively shallow writing. This shift raises important pedagogical questions about how writing instruction can remain meaningful and sustainable in AI-enabled learning environments. Drawing on classroom experience in Vietnam, this presentation explores how curriculum coherence can be strengthened to support authentic writing development. It examines common patterns of AI use among learners and highlights the challenges teachers face in maintaining student engagement, originality, and critical thinking. Rather than attempting to restrict AI use, the presentation proposes a set of practical strategies for task design, classroom interaction, and formative feedback that encourage deeper learning and responsible use of technology. These strategies aim to help teachers integrate AI as a supportive tool while preserving the core educational value of writing. The session offers practical insights for English language teachers seeking to adapt their teaching practices to the evolving demands of AI-mediated classrooms.

Biography

Nguyen Phan is an English language educator based in Vietnam, with extensive experience teaching IELTS, Cambridge English, and academic writing. He is particularly interested in helping learners develop more confident, thoughtful, and independent use of English. His professional interests include classroom-based writing pedagogy, curriculum design, reflective teaching, and the responsible use of AI in language education. Through his work, he aims to connect everyday classroom practice with meaningful and sustainable learning.
