Description
As bilingual education expands across Vietnam and other multilingual contexts, the success of implementation increasingly depends on teacher capacity rather than policy intentions alone. This presentation is grounded in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), bilingual pedagogy, and practitioner-based evidence from Edison Schools’ bilingual education model. It explores how teachers can transform English from a standalone subject into a language of learning, enabling students to access academic content, engage in critical thinking, conduct research, and participate in interdisciplinary projects through English.
The presentation introduces a comprehensive bilingual teacher competency framework consisting of six interconnected domains: classroom English proficiency, academic English instruction, bilingual pedagogy, bilingual materials design, assessment literacy, and the integration of AI and educational technology. It also presents a four-layer English development model that supports students’ progression from everyday communication to academic and future-oriented language use.
Drawing on authentic school-based practices, participants will examine sustainable professional development strategies, including CLIL training, classroom-based coaching, lesson observation, AI-supported instructional design, and collaborative resource development. Practical examples from bilingual Maths, Science, and interdisciplinary project-based learning will demonstrate how teachers can scaffold language and content simultaneously.
Participants will gain a clear framework for evaluating and developing bilingual teacher competencies, along with actionable recommendations for schools, teacher education institutions, and policymakers seeking to strengthen bilingual education implementation and improve student learning outcomes.
