Description

This study investigates how English majors use collocations in speaking and draws practical implications for learning and teaching improvement. In order to obtain the research aim, the study specifically examines students’ understanding of collocations, their ability to use collocations in speaking, and their perceptions of collocation use in spoken performances. The research design is mixed-method, adopting both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The research population were second-year students of English language majors, and the participants were recruited through convenient sampling. Following the data collection procedure, the participating students first completed the Collocation test that measured their knowledge of English collocations to which they had been exposed to throughout their current English integrated skills courses (equivalent to B2 level, CEFR). Next, a subset of those participants responded to a mini Speaking test trying to produce the learned collocations relevant to the speaking prompt, and were then interviewed regarding their opinions of producing the collocations orally. The research findings reveal that there exists a noticeable gap between how much students know and understand English collocations and how able they are to produce them while speaking. In addition, the study sheds light on present challenges that the students have encountered within the effort to use collocations when speaking English, from which learning and teaching activities are proposed for effective acquisition of collocations.
