Description

In the foundational years of primary education, the "human touch" remains the cornerstone of effective English language learning. This presentation proposes a pedagogical model for the Vietnamese context where Artificial Intelligence (AI) functions strictly as a supportive tool, while the teacher’s role as a mentor and emotional anchor is elevated. Unlike secondary or adult learners, primary students require high levels of social interaction, empathy, and physical engagement—elements that AI cannot replicate.

The session focuses on practical, teacher-led strategies to enhance traditional methods such as Total Physical Response (TPR) and Storytelling through AI assistance. We demonstrate how teachers can use AI (e.g., image generators and voice synthesisers) to create tailored visual aids and interactive listening materials that align with specific cultural contexts in Vietnam. This approach allows educators to spend less time on manual preparation and more time on direct student engagement, behavioural management, and fostering a love for the language.

A comparative analysis within the presentation suggests that for primary learners, a blended approach—where technology serves the pedagogy—is superior to tech-heavy models. Attendees will explore a "Teacher-in-the-Loop" framework, ensuring that AI tools are used responsibly to differentiate instruction without compromising the essential teacher-student bond. The session concludes with actionable steps for primary teachers to stay tech-savvy while remaining at the heart of the classroom.
