Description
As Vietnam transitions from an EFL to an ESL context, pre-service teacher education must extend beyond traditional university modules to cultivate highly adaptable educators. Grounded in experiential learning theory, this presentation explores the multifaceted professional development journey of a pre-service teacher bridging the gap between pedagogical theory and real-world practice.
The proposal reflects on the integration of academic coursework with diverse practical engagements, including high school practicums, part-time language center instruction, and volunteer tutoring initiatives for the community. By analyzing classroom observations and hands-on teaching experiences, the presentation illustrates how applying innovative methods such as group discussions and technology integration—enhances student engagement and learning outcomes. Furthermore, it examines how active involvement in national ELT conventions and community service projects contributes to the development of a robust professional identity and greater cultural responsiveness.
Attendees will gain practical insights into the positive outcomes of this holistic learning approach, which successfully builds teacher agency and practical competence for the modern ESL classroom. The session concludes with actionable recommendations for teacher education programs and aspiring educators, emphasizing the necessity of combining formal academic training with extensive community and professional involvement to ensure sustainable professional growth and readiness for the evolving educational landscape.
