Description
In recent years, Social–Emotional Learning (SEL) has been increasingly recognized as a key factor supporting students’ engagement and communication in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. However, in many Vietnamese university contexts, SEL remains implicitly present rather than explicitly integrated into teaching practices. This study explores the awareness, experiences, and perceived effects of SEL-related activities among 58 fourth-year English-major students at Tay Nguyen University. Using a questionnaire-based design, the findings reveal that while students demonstrate generally positive awareness of SEL competencies—particularly in social awareness and responsible decision-making—their self-management skills, such as handling anxiety and maintaining motivation, remain less developed.
The study also shows that commonly implemented speaking activities, including pair work, role-play, and peer feedback, naturally embed SEL elements, yet explicit emotional support and reflective practices are less frequently emphasized. Importantly, students perceive SEL-related activities as beneficial in enhancing confidence, reducing anxiety, and improving interaction in speaking tasks.
Based on these findings, the study proposes several practical implications for EFL teachers, including the intentional design of emotionally supportive speaking tasks, the integration of structured reflection, and the promotion of safe classroom environments to foster both language development and social–emotional growth. The study contributes to bridging the gap between SEL theory and classroom practice in the Vietnamese EFL context.
