Description

In many rural classrooms in Vietnam, primary students have very limited opportunities to practice speaking English. In my own teaching context, large class sizes and short lesson time mean that not every child can speak, and many become hesitant or lack confidence when using English. At the same time, most students do not have personal digital devices, so solutions that rely on mobile phones or computers are not always practical. To respond to this situation, this presentation introduces a simple, low-cost project that makes use of a familiar device in students’ homes: an internet-connected television. The project involves teacher-created videos built around Leo, a virtual character who acts as a friendly conversational partner. Each video is closely linked to the topics of the textbook units and includes everyday questions, simple language models, and pauses that allow students to respond aloud. The videos also provide clear pronunciation models, helping students listen and imitate more accurately. Although the interaction is simulated, it encourages students to actively speak rather than just watch. Based on classroom observations and informal assessments, students appear more willing to speak, show clearer pronunciation, and feel more confident in class. Many also choose to practice repeatedly at home in their own time. This approach offers a simple but practical way to extend speaking practice beyond the classroom, and to gradually build a more meaningful English-speaking environment for students in similar rural contexts.
