Description

Brainstorming is widely used as a scaffolded technique to help generate and organize ideas. This study set out to investigate the difficulties the third-year English majors face in meeting the requirements of the Task Response criterion in IELTS Academic writing Task 2, and examine their evaluation of brainstorming in improving the Task Response criterion. Questionnaires using Likert scales were applied to collect the data from 59 English majors at Quang Nam university. The findings indicate that the English majors encountered considerable difficulties in meeting the Task Response criterion in IELTS academic writing Task 2, and had positive attitudes towards the employment of brainstorming technique to address common challenges they confronted in achieving this criterion. It is expected that issues unfolded from this study could theoretically contribute to a better understanding of brainstorming in writing essays in general and in the discipline of Task response criterion in particular. Based on the findings, recommendations are proposed to integrate brainstorming techniques into writing instruction to enhance the English majors' IELTS writing performance.

Biography

Nguyen Thi Trung- Dean of Faculty of Foreign Languages, Quang Nam University. She received her BA degree in English from Hue University in 2001, MA in English Linguistics from the University of Da Nang in 2008, Ph.D in English Linguistics from University of Foreign Language Studies, the University of Da Nang in 2022. She attended a course in English Language and Teaching Methods for International English Teachers at Carleton University, Canada in 2006. Her main areas of interest involve Teaching Methodology, Curriculum Design, Discourse Analysis and Functional Grammar.
