Description

This study looks at how multiple intelligences (MI) affect speaking strategy use among English majors at a Vietnamese university. It uses a mixed-methods approach, combining questionnaire data on students’ MI profiles and reported strategies with qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews. The results show that interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences are the most prominent among participants. Social and compensation strategies are reported the most often. Correlational analyses reveal a moderate link between interpersonal intelligence and social strategy use. There is also a notable connection between intrapersonal intelligence and metacognitive strategies. However, the lack of consistent significant correlations across all intelligence areas suggests that MI alone provides limited understanding. Qualitative findings add complexity by showing a disconnect between students’ cognitive profiles and their strategic practices. For example, students with strong interpersonal skills still often depend on compensation strategies, mainly due to limited language skills and low self-esteem. This trend indicates that the frequency of using strategies should not be seen as a sign of effective communication. Overall, the findings highlight the need for more focused teaching methods. Strategy instruction might be more effective if it aligns with students’ intelligence profiles, leading to better speaking performance in university-level EFL contexts.
