Abstract
This study investigates the impact of English trivia activities on students’ motivation in learning English as a second language (ESL) in secondary school. Recognizing that low motivation is a common barrier to effective language acquisition, the research explores whether integrating trivia-based games into classroom instruction can enhance students’ interest and engagement.
An experimental design was employed with two groups of students: an experimental group exposed to regular English trivia activities and a control group taught using traditional methods. Data were collected through questionnaires, classroom observations, and pre- and post-intervention motivation scales. The intervention lasted for eight weeks and included a variety of trivia formats such as team quizzes, rapid-response questions, and multimedia-based challenges.
The findings indicate that students who participated in English trivia activities showed a significant increase in motivation compared to those in the control group. Specifically, improvements were observed in students’ willingness to participate, confidence in using English, and overall enjoyment of the learning process. The interactive and competitive nature of trivia was found to create a supportive and dynamic learning environment.
In conclusion, English trivia can be an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing students’ motivation in ESL classrooms. The study suggests that incorporating game-based activities into language teaching may contribute positively to both learners’ attitudes and language development. Further research is recommended to explore long-term effects and applications in different educational settings.
