Description
Teaching oral skills in English is one of the greatest challenges in Vietnam, especially teaching students in regional areas of central Vietnam. The positive effects of Peer Learning (PL) and Reflective Learning (RL) in teaching English have been widely reported, however little research attention has focused on integrating Reflective and Peer Learning into lessons to develop oracy skills for Vietnamese students. Through a nine-week online study with twenty-two regional Vietnamese students of six cohorts between March 2022 and December 2025, we address this gap. In this oral presentation, we provide the rationale for educators and policy makers to integrate reflective and peer learning activities into English lessons using videos to develop learners’ oracy skills in English–Medium Instructions (EMI) contexts. Through a collective-case study of qualitative data over four years, we provide insights into regional Vietnamese learners’ experiences, their attitudes towards reflective and peer learning activities in developing their oracy skills and offer strategies for educators to create an effective online English language course. This study offers a novel way of developing learners’ oracy skills in TESOL contexts using reflective and oracy skills frameworks and contributes to the literature of pedagogical EMI intervention. It has a great potential to contribute to the Vietnamese national plan (2025–2035) in repositioning English to a second language in higher education.
